FEATURED TRIP REPORT:
Farm-to-Table in Brittany, France
Summary of our trip to Brittany in April 2024
Eating our way through Brittany
It’s hard to select highlights of our recent Farm-to-Table trip to St Malo, Brittany, with Simon Renault of Scott Farm. We did quite a lot. My personal favorite was walking through the mud in the famous oyster beds of Cancale.
During our April 2024 trip we ate galettes, visited an historic flour mill, toured the weekly market of Dinan, baked apple breads at a farm, and visited a chateau that is being renovated by a community nonprofit.
We learned about the hard cider made in Brittany when we visited a commercial cidery that works with over 150 small-scale apple producers, pressing the apples in the fall and bottling a variety of ciders throughout the year.
Another highlight was our visit to Mont Saint Michel, climbing to the top and visiting the abbey there.
In Cancale, outfitted in big rubber boots, we learned how oysters are raised in Brittany with the area’s clear waters and extremely high tides. Then we had a taste, followed by a picnic lunch looking out over the water to Mont Saint Michel.
