Walking the Kerry Camino - Dingle, Ireland

The Dingle Peninsula - May 23-31, 2025

Ireland: A lovely place for a walk

May 23-31, 2025

Most of us think of Spain when we think of the Camino, but indeed the network of Camino paths stretches all through Europe, including a number of sections in Ireland. On this tour we’ll walk one of these Irish sections across the length of the Dingle Peninsula on the western-most point of the Republic of Ireland.

Our journey will begin in Tralee (or Trá Lí in Gaelic). We will spend three days walking point-to-point on the Kerry Camino, staying in Irish Bed & Breakfasts along the way.  Once we arrive in Dingle, the largest town on the peninsula, we’ll take a day off to explore the town and you can optionally take a marine wildlife tour from Dingle harbor.

For the next three days we’ll take day walks out of Dingle, exploring the dramatic coastline and the rolling interior with flowering hedgerows separating the green fields with white sheep dotted all around.

We will have a local Irish guide to lead our walks and share insights into regional history and culture. A van will carry our bags. And we will meet you at the Dublin airport and accompany you to the start point of this tour.

The Kerry Camino

The Kerry Camino is a 35-mile walking path that brings you near to the tip of the Dingle Peninsula. The path brought pilgrims to Dingle’s St. James church, built by Spanish merchants who dedicated it to St. James of Santiago de Compostela. Pilgrims could then continue on to Spain by boat. The route was once walked by one of the best-known Irish Saints, St. Brendan the Navigator.

The path is officially recognized by the Camino Society of Ireland and is well marked along the route with the traditional scallop shell.

From Tralee, we will walk along a canal before rising gently onto the peninsula and spending the night at a Bed & Breakfast in the village of Camp. The distance is 12 miles. On the second day, we continue along the peninsula, with striking views of hills, valleys and the sea. We can take a break at Inch Beach, the longest beach in Ireland, before spending the night in a Bed & Breakfast in Annascaul. The distance is 10 miles.

On day 3, we pass the ruins of Minard Castle, on a rocky beach, before heading inland to walk among the sheep. The path then drops down into Dingle where we’ll stay for the remainder of this tour, taking day hikes from there.  Day 3 will be 13 miles (this leg can be shortened, if desired).

The vast majority of the path is on small roads and agricultural passages.  Your bags will be transferred for you to the night’s lodging, leaving you to carry just a day pack with a change of clothes, water and a snack. Lunches will be provided.

It was a wonderful trip. It was my first tour-group experience and it was perfect. It was well organized and I enjoyed all the other pilgrims on the walk. The group size was just right.

Really a wonderful experience and great people. I’d do it again in a heartbeat.

Why walk in Ireland

One walks in Ireland because it is absolutely lovely. There are more shades of green than you can imagine. You will be walking through farms and fields, complete with sheep, cows and horses. Hedge rows divide the fields and hills rise up in the distance.

And don’t forget the ocean. There are cliffs and beaches, and dramatic islands shoot out of the water.

There are also the people. The Irish seem to always have time to greet you and engage in conversation.

You’ll have the option of a day trip on a small boat and you can listen to traditional Irish music in the evening as you embrace pub culture.

Yes, it is true that it rains in Ireland, but not every day and most days when it rains, it’s mostly alternating showers and sun. And with the right equipment, even a more rainy day holds great beauty.  But of course, if the weather is particularly bad, you’ll have the option of staying indoors.

On this tour, we will benefit from a local guide who will walk with us each day. In addition to keeping us on the track and safe, he will share much about the local culture and history.

Where we will stay

Our first night will be in the town of Tralee where we’ll be in an Irish Bed & Breakfast. From there, we’ll spend two nights out walking point-to-point on the Camino, staying in Bed & Breakfasts.  All rooms have private bathrooms.

Once we arrive in Dingle, we’ll stay at An Capall Dubh, located in a quiet courtyard nearly in the center of town. (Visit the An Capall Dubh website) We will stay here for five nights, and again, all rooms have private bathrooms.
